Ease is not my friend.

Hello everyone! I'm new to this KAL, and itching to cast on! Got my yarn and everything. The only problem is.. I don't know which size to make! I don't knit garments very often, so ease always causes me a lot of heartache.

So how much ease are you incorporating into your cardigans? I'm a 36" bust, so I can do the 35.5" with negative .5" ease, or the 39.5" with positive 3.5" ease. At first I was leaning towards the larger size, because the schematic looks like the finished size incorporates the gap in the front, but then I did the math and it looks like the finished size is only the amount of fabric. So now I'm leaning towards the smaller size! But I figured I'd ask around for some reassurance before I actually cast on and make a commitment. (For the record, I have gauge.)

Hi Danielle- Welcome!

I don't have an answer for you, just writing to commiserate. I also always obsess about the ease issue. I tend to like my clothes loose, but recognize that isn't usually the most flattering.

I'm using a lighter weight yarn than recommended so I'm knitting to the larger size and crossing my fingers. I'm hoping for a few inches of positive ease .. at least, I think that's what I want. :D

I interpreted the schematic differently than you did. The front sides together have as many stitches as the back. The circumference is a measure of the knitted pieces only. (I think) This adds to my ease confusion because it's designed to be worn open. This makes me think maybe less ease is warranted.

It's a bit of a leap of faith for me, but so far I'm really enjoying the knitting!

I've actually edited my post since you commented, because I went back and actually looked at the stitch count. And now I think that the smaller size with less ease would be better.

At any rate, I'm glad to at least know that I'm not the only one!

Hi,

I'm making the 34" size. I have a 32" bust, so that gives me 2" of ease. However, I tend to knit most of my garments with zero or even negative ease, so I'm hoping that this doesn't seem too large to me once it's done.

I will add that the moss stitch seems very stretchy. If you make the smaller size and it looks too small, I bet you can block it to a larger size without much difficulty.

I say it depends on how loose or tight you light your garments. I usually go for negative ease because I like my clothes fitted.

My past experience with moss stitch is that if you use wool and you wet block it, you can gain an inch or two as it relaxes.
